What pool filter suits my pool?

Many people wonder what filtration type would be suitable for their backyard pool. Residential swimming pools primarily use sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. Each type has different pros and cons, let’s have a look at them.

Sand Filters

Sand filters are common, they operate by pumping water through a tank filled with specially graded sand. As water flows through the sand, debris, and particles are trapped. These filters require backwashing to remove trapped debris, which involves reversing the water flow. Sand typically needs replacement every 5-7 years. Sand filters are simple to use, durable, and cost-effective. However, they filter particles only down to 20-40 microns, and backwashing can waste significant amounts of water.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters use pleated cartridges made of polyester fabric to trap debris as water passes through. The cartridges need to be removed and rinsed every few weeks or months, depending on pool usage and local conditions. Cartridges generally last 2-3 years before needing replacement. Cartridge filters provide finer filtration, trapping particles down to 10-20 microns. They do not require backwashing, as it’s not even possible, and thus conserve water. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain optimal performance, which may be considered a drawback by some (backwashing can be seen as an easier option).

DE Filters

DE filters offer the finest filtration available, capable of trapping particles as small as 2-5 microns. They use grids coated with diatomaceous earth (a fine powder) to filter the water. Maintenance involves regular backwashing to remove trapped debris and replenishing the DE powder. The grids themselves need periodic cleaning and eventual replacement. DE filters are ideal for those seeking the best possible filtration. However, they are more complex to operate and maintain, and the ongoing cost of DE powder is a con. Handling DE powder can be messy and poses mild respiratory risks, requiring careful handling.

Selection

Choosing the right filtration system depends on your budget, the level of maintenance you’re willing to do, and the desired quality of water filtration. Sand filters are ideal for those seeking a low-cost, low-maintenance option with moderate filtration needs. Cartridge filters are suitable for those wanting better water clarity with straightforward maintenance. DE filters are perfect for those prioritising the highest water clarity and are willing to invest more time and money into maintenance.

In summary, each filtration system has its pros and cons, and the best choice will depend on one’s specific needs, maintenance preferences, and budget.
